Julian Tanner Boaen Sr. (84), of Savannah, Georgia, passed away in his home the night of Saturday, August 1, 2026.

Julian was born on August 23, 1941, in Savannah, Georgia, as the tenth of eleven children raised by Mary Elizabeth and Eddie Milton Boaen. Julian grew up on Ferguson Avenue and graduated from Herschel V. Jenkins High School in 1960. After graduating, he started working for the Central of Georgia Railroad and enlisted in the United States Coast Guard Reserve.

Julian met Judie while eating lunch one day in high school; they dated for five years before marrying on April 10, 1965, and went on to have two kids: Julian “Jay”  Boaen in 1967 and Jennifer Boaen in 1971. Judie and Julian were married for sixty-one years.

During his eight years in the United States Coast Guard Reserve, Julian was called to active duty during the closest the world has ever come to nuclear war, the Cuban Missile Crisis in October 1962. He was twenty-one years old. He and roughly two hundred fellow reservists had reported to the USCGC Unimak believing they were there for routine training; most had never even loaded a weapon. Instead, the ship received orders to arm up and head for Cuba. The ship was soon ordered to turn around and disarm just before reaching Cuban waters.

After serving his country, he worked for half a decade at United Insurance Company before joining Local 188 and entering the pipefitting industry. He retired after nearly thirty-two years in 2001.

In retirement, Julian went into business with his son, Jay, and formed Boaen Properties, a housing rental business in Savannah, Georgia. He continued to work alongside Jay for eight years, finally deciding to retire fully and spend time traveling around the United States and the world with his wife, Judie. 

Julian was known for being close with his grandchildren, making sure each of them knew how to fix things, handle a boat in open water, and do things the right way. He would always finish a task with a “Mighty fine!” and a thumbs up.

Julian Tanner Boaen Sr. is survived by his wife, Judie Johnson Boaen; their two children, Julian “Jay” Tanner Boaen Jr. (Tina) and Jennifer Elaine Boaen Cone (Doug) and five grandchildren, Kathryn “Katie” Lindsey Boaen, Hunter Douglas Cone, Samantha Caroline Boaen, Tanner Boaen Cone, and Jessica Danielle Cone.

Services, performed by Rev. Doug M. Cone. The visitation will begin at 11:30a.m., Wednesday, August 12th, followed by a funeral service at 12:30p.m. at Fox & Weeks Hodgson Chapel  in Savannah, Georgia,. The committal will be at 2:00p.m., in Forest Lawn Memory Garden.

The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, remembrances be made to Shriners Hospital, Antioch Baptist Church, and the Jessie L. Johnson Scholarship Fund at Southside Baptist Church.

My children knew him as Grandfather or as Santa when he made sure there was a stocking and gifts. They don't have a biological Grandfather so this was a real treat. My best memories are him excitingly telling me about the girls. He would come alive with energy. And when he and Livey would both break out in laughter. They had a special bond and we are so blessed. I'm glad they brought as much joy to him as he brought to them.
